Donald Trump's System of Consequences and Incentives

Trump's insatiable appetite for revenge has rapidly morphed into a structured framework. Within the twelve months, the president's fury and whims have adopted the shape of administrative measures in a manner comparable to past dictatorial systems. Justice department personnel who fail to comply are immediately dismissed and succeeded by devotees. Political figures who challenge him encounter legal action, court proceedings and punishment. Adversaries have been labeled under administration orders as “hostile to national interests”, “opposed to religious values” and “opposing economic freedom”, and menaced with criminal charges as “extremists”.

The Justice System Remade

Each situation involving targeting of political opponents and leniency for his allies exhibits its own particular qualities. Yet, despite their specific form, they embody examples of what has developed as a deliberate method. Such episodes are not coincidental. His purge of DoJ prosecutors and FBI officials, alongside his placement of devotees in high-level posts, started rapidly, quickly assumed a regularity, and has now been shaped into a regime. DoJ and the Federal Bureau have been remade into partisan agencies under the president's clear orders to implement his demands. Unfairness has been made routine. This is the retribution system.

Leadership is focused with targeting the chief's perceived opponents than they are with protecting our national security.

Internal the Apparatus

The beginnings of this mechanism has been exposed in the court filing of multiple previous high-ranking law enforcement agents lodged in the ninth month in the US district court in DC against FBI director Kash Patel and top lawyer a key figure for wrongful dismissal in “a campaign of retribution against the officials for what the accused judged to be a failure to show adequate political loyalty”. The document states that a former acting director, the former interim leader, details a conversation in which he “publicly acknowledged the illegality of his actions”.

He had sought to shield agency personnel from being terminated, the filing claims. The director told him that “administration officials” – interpreted by him to be the presidential administration and federal prosecutors – had instructed him to dismiss anyone who they determined as having been involved in a legal probe against him. The filing continues: “The director clarified that he had to fire the individuals his bosses told him to dismiss, because his ability to hold his own role depended on the ouster of the agents who handled cases involving the chief executive. He noted that there was no option he or the official could do to prevent these or any other dismissals, because ‘the bureau sought to incarcerate the chief in detention and he remembers.’” After the official informed the director he was disregarding the agency's own policies, Patel supposedly said “he understood that and he was aware the nature of the summary firings were probably unlawful”.

Extensive Consequences

Since the director's reported confession to him, the Department of Justice and the FBI have been dismantled and redirected for his revenge apparatus. Multiple of the bureau's high-ranking agents were dismissed or pushed out in the first days of the administration. About 4,500 legal professionals at the justice department have accepted a “early exit scheme”. No fewer than seven federal prosecutors, such as those in the southern district of New York, resigned in objection over what they regarded as political interference in dropping the corruption case against the local official, the mayor, in exchange for his cooperation with Trump's Immigration and Customs Enforcement roundups of foreign nationals. The anti-corruption unit of the department, which oversees ethical violations, has been diminished to minimal staff. The rights protection unit has been decimated: 70% of its staff has resigned. A third of top officials at the justice department have resigned. The section enforcing conservation statutes has seen departures of a majority its supervisors.

Rewards and Penalties

Regarding the legal matter, the interim prosecutor for the southern district of New York, the official, resigned in protest against what she characterized as the “exchange”. A key figure, the president's “border czar,” appeared as the implementer with him on Fox News to declare: “Should he fail to deliver, I'll be back in New York City.”. Additionally, another figure, formerly the acting deputy attorney general and a past legal representative, who arranged the deal, was awarded an appellate federal judgeship, a possible pathway to the judicial branch.

The president's protection for wrongdoings committed while in power, awarded by the unprecedented judgment of the conservative on the highest court, thus thwarting his criminal case over the January 6 insurrection and preserving his political viability for the 2024 election, is the basis on which he depends to shield his supporters. With such immunity, he has been freed to authorize wrongdoing. The consequence of the court judgment permeates his government and the political party completely. The court matter has escalated. In the words of the former president's administration lawyer he remarked about the Watergate
