New research reveals that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments need to be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise usually see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened weight return.
These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated lifestyle management.
