Larian Studios Reveal a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The anticipation about the recent awards show was significant, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a daring trailer that included memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the literal unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also wonderfully permissive, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a inventive way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
