The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has stated that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from the back issue, but further aspects," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the opener.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
