The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly young people's protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic graft in politics.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with several leading political figures. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
